Here are some of the Lakota soccer team at Redcloud High School in Dakota, modelling some of the gifts they received from us as part of our cultural exchange ‘Culture in a Box’ project. Both schools have already swapped smaller items and started pen pal letters writing between students.

On Thursday 5th January and Monday 9th January 2012, over 30 Year 9 pupils from The Albion High School visited Manchester Metropolitan University and The University of Manchester. During these University days, pupils were able to practise their Spanish language skills with native speakers of other foreign languages and meet teenagers from other schools also studying languages. Pupils were also able to trial new languages such as Chinese, Russian and German, as well as creating a script and a short film in Spanish! ¡Buen trabajo chicos!

Our Christmas meal this year took place on the last day of term and, at just £1 for a traditional Christmas lunch with all the trimmings, it was very good value. We offer a wide range of food each day, including several halal options, and a normal lunch costs no more than £2.
We also provide a free breakfast for everyone who arrives before 830am – and we are now offering free tea and toast at the end of school, to support those who wish to stay on for clubs, or to work with the Learning mentors.

The evening was rounded off by a rendition of 'In the Bleak Midwinter'. Thanks go all concerned - and especially to Miss Payne, our Head of Music, without whose efforts none of this would have been possible.

On 7 December, our Y10 Young Enterprise groups spent a successful day at the Manchester Christmas Market, selling their wares. They chose two great locations for the stands, both teams set up quickly and professionally and by 10 am they were raring to go! By the end of the day, sales totalled £155 – of which the ‘Encourage’ team raised £98. Our students were congratulated by a number of people on the professionalism of their stall, their attitude and their customer service skills – well done all!

Children In Need
Thanks to the efforts of many students and staff, over £700 was raised in school for this year's Children In Need day.
Together with the £330 raised for the NSPCC through participation in the recent Salford sponsored run, this means that our students and staff have already raised over £1000 this school year, to support those less fortunate than themselves.
This is a fantastic achievement to reflect on, as we approach the Christmas period.

Thirty Year 9 students from Albion who displayed excellence and commitment to their sports in school were rewarded with a free trip to watch a recent Rugby League international game. They had a great time watching England win, and were able to buy shirts at a special low price to commemorate their free day out. Pictured are two students either side of the Head of PE, Mr Svabic.

We are proud to have received the full award as an International school, for our work with schools in other countries. You may have seen a recent article in the Salford Advertiser, about our new link with Lakota Indians in America.
We have also just completed the first phase of our link with 22 Mexican schools, which is boosting our young people’s learning in Spanish classes.
Children from the two countries exchanged ‘culture in a box’. We described our ‘British heroes’ – ranging from Florence Nightingale to Wayne Rooney. The photograph shows a detail from a ‘cultural collage’ sent to us by one of our Mexican partner schools.

In December 2011, The Albion canteen provided pupils with Spanish food “to die” for including Albóndigas (Spanish meat balls), Tortilla Española (Spanish Omlette) and much much more in conjunction with our Year 8 scheme of work based on food! Year 8’s were asked to design a menu to go along with the canteen food! We had some amazing entries but the winner was ...
Well Done Demi and ¡Buen aproveche a todos!

It has been another bumper year for The Albion High School, where 43% of students achieved five or more higher grades including English and Maths.
The star of the show was Marie Grace Nkeshimana who achieved 21 higher level passes including 10 A* grades and seven A Grades.
During her time at The Albion High School Marie Grace has achieved a young citizens award from the Swinton Rotary Club, she has been a student ambassador, a Peer mentor, a young volunteer and a member of the schools Young Enterprise team, who reached the regional finals. Marie Grace who also sat on the board for the school council said “I cannot believe it! I have really enjoyed my time at The Albion and I would like to thank all my teachers for all their support”.
Head teacher Mr Steve Aveyard said “Once again students and staff have achieved our best-ever results, through their hard work and determination. We are very pleased to see our young people making a great start to their career during these difficult times”.
Mrs Diane Wood, Head of Upper School, said “Our school motto is 'Aiming high, achieving excellence' and these young people have shown how true that is”.

This is excellent news for the school and for its local community. It brings £100,000 a year of extra funding that will enable us to do even more work to boost the learning opportunities not only of our own pupils and their families but also of others in and around this area.

The Visual Arts team was already a Salford Lead Department, and has been producing each year a high number of very successful students through a range of Arts GCSE courses, and now increasingly via the Btec Art & Design award, which is worth four good GCSE grades to these budding young artists and designers. The team is also developing a new course for the Creative and Media diploma.
